seo-tutorial-for-wordpress-ranking-success-part-2-senseo

In the previous tutorial, we went over the importance of keywords and keyword density in titles and tags. Today we will cover how to tweak your website to make sure the HTML code is Optimized for Search Engines. If you didnt know already, SEO stands for “Search Engine Optimization”. It is the act of tweaking your HTML / PHP code to display your keywords correctly.

Lets fire up senSEO

We will be using firefox browser today as it is not only the best browser, it allows us to install add-ons to better develop websites. To use the senSEO plugin we first need to download and install the firebug plugin.

Once Firebug is up and running you will notice a new toolbar icon down the bottom of the page. This isn’t a tutorial on firebug so we’ll just carry on and not play around with its cool development features. Lets now download and install the senSEO plugin.

Let senSEO score your website

Lets get our new plugin to show us what we are doing right and what we are doing wrong. I’m going to use my website as an example. Now one thing you need to keep in mind is that you will get a different score on each page as there is different content. You will also get a different score for different keyword searched. How do we cater for different searched? Well, your home page should be generic and be able to capture a vast array of keyword searched (non specific terms) but as you go deeper within your website, your keywords should become more specific. Think of your website as a tree’s roots. They all stem from one point but the further they go down the more they branch off into new areas.

  1. click on the icon to bring up the senSEO toolbar (notice that is a new tab of the firebug plugin)
  2. enter in some keywords a potential client / customer might enter in google (I’m goign to use “wordpress seo designer”)
  3. Look at the results!

Here’s a screenshot of my results

As you can see, senSEO is looking at everything! from titles to keyword density. Now dont be scared if you get a realy bad score, I used to have a terribly low one too. What you need to do is work down the list and get everything as high as it can be. The main things you should look at are:

  1. Is your title filled with keywords? (note you will have to cater for lots of different searches and keywords so this is why we need dynamic titles. We will look at this in the next tutorial)
  2. Make sure your title length is under 65 characters
  3. Make sure your keyword and Description meta tags are working properly.
  4. Make sure you only use your h1 tag once! No exeptions.

Whats next?

I hope that looking at your website through senSEO’s eyes have given you some more insight into google ranking. Now that we can see some problems you need to go off into wordpress and start to play with your titles and tags/keywords. In the next tutorial we will look at how to use this senSEO data and edit your theme with the help of headspace2.
