I had always turned a blind eye to the power of CMS (Content Management Systems) but it hit me today how we must constantly change and adapt when my web design teacher told me we are no longer needed as web designers, we are needed as web advertisers.

It seems strange but it makes sense. Anyone can install WordPress or Joomla, buy a $100 good theme and then BANG you have a fully customizable website and/or store with a fully working shopping cart. So in a sense, the traditional web designer isn’t really needed: We aren’t needed to design anymore. What we can do though is advertise a website.

This now brings in the whole aspect of SEO and SEM into the picture. We as designers have the skills to manipulate themes to enhance SEO and we have the knowledge to apply SEM to get websites to number 1 on a search engine.

So now I am going to spend less time worrying about design and focus more on SEO and SEM for a while because if this trend continues, there will be little money in designing, but a lot more money in marketing. I still love design and don’t want to change my personality to adapt to the business world but I think this could be a very exiting adventure down a windy road.
